Clare Hennessy

Clare is a writer, musician and performer living and working on Gadigal country. After a childhood immersed in the performing arts, her passion for playwriting was ignited after selection for the Sydney Theatre Company’s Young Playwright Residency 2011. She went on to obtain a BA in Comms (Theatre/Media) from Charles Sturt University, and then a Masters in Fine Arts (Writing For Performance) from the National Institute of Dramatic Art at the age of 21. Her debut work, “Elegy”, toured nationally including to festivals at La Boite, ATYP and Perth’s Fringeworld festival. She experimented with many forms and genres as the resident playwright of the production company she co-founded, Left of Centre Theatre Co, including works that were staged for indie theatres across New South Wales and Victoria.

As a sound designer, she has worked for both indie and mainstage companies across Australia; for The Ensemble, she has worked on plays by David Williamson and Melanie Tait, and on Ignite collective’s “Hush” By Celia Williams for Brown’s Mart Theatre. In the indie sector, she has worked on exciting new works by writers such as Jordy Shea, Jojo Zhou, Zoe Hogan, Charlie Garber, Gretel Vella and Katy Warner, developing a deep love for sonic dramaturgy and appreciation for the possibilities that theatre can offer, in spaces such as Belvoir’s 25A and KXT.

She co-wrote and co-starred in award winning mini-series “Achtung: Mein Kunst”, which enjoyed a festival run both domestically and internationally. She also appeared as a performer in the Little Egg’s award winning production Symphonie Fantastique. As a musician, her solo project Hennessy Rose sees her combine her love of storytelling and music.
