Hilary is an award-winning playwright and lyricist. These include Wolf Lullaby, Fortune, The Anatomy Lesson of Doctor Ruysch, The Falls, Memmie Le Blanc, The Mysteries: Genesis (with Lally Katz), The Red Balloon, The White Divers of Broome, Splinter, Perfect Stranger, Victim Sidekick Boyfriend Me, Angela’s Kitchen (with Paul Capsis), Summer of Harold, and adaptations of A Christmas Carol, The Seagull, The Comedy of Errors and The Hypochondriac. Music theatre works include the opera Mrs President (composer, Victoria Bond) and musicals The Red Tree and Alphabetical Sydney: All Aboard! (comp. Greta Gertler Gold), Starstruck the Stage Musical (with Mitchell Butel), The Wedding Song (comp. Douglas Stephen Rae, dir. Jim Sharman) and Do Good And You Will Be Happy (comp. Phillip Johnston). She has written song cycles including Talk Show with Elena Kats-Chernin, Gothic and After Julia with Andrée Greenwell, and Marrickville Mermaid with Luke Styles. For Ensemble Offspring and seven composers, she wrote Seven Stories, performed at City Recital Hall. Also for CRH, she wrote new verses for Saint-Saëns’ The Carnival of the Animals. She is currently writing the book for a musical for UK production company Scenario Two, directed by Michael Gracey with composer Jacob Collier, and with Greta Gertler Gold, an adaptation of Picnic at Hanging Rock to be directed by Jo Bonney.

Hilary has written audio-scripts for the Museum of Contemporary Art and the State Library of NSW. The recipient of awards including the inaugural Philip Parsons, the Jill Blewitt, an Inscription Award, a Helpmann and two AWGIES, and shortlisted for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, Hilary is co-creator of several picture books, including ‘Numerical Street’, ‘Summer Time’ and bestseller ‘Alphabetical Sydney’ with Antonia Pesenti. She is a member of 7-On Playwrights and a graduate of the Juilliard Playwrights’ Program, NIDA and AFTRS. She was the Tennessee Williams Fellow 2003-04 and the 2012 Patrick White Playwrights’ Fellow at the STC. She has served on boards including Griffin, ANPC and Australian Plays, and is currently a Visiting Scholar at the State Library of NSW.
