The Hoist by Sarah Hope

LENGTH: 90 Minutes
SUITABLE FOR: Senior Years
CAST SIZE: 5 – 6 Cast Members

When we grow up hair appears where it never used to be, the cubby falls to pieces and we stop hanging off clotheslines

When we are small we skip, jump, hide and feel every rain drop. Then we grow hair where it never used to be, the cubby falls to pieces and we stop hanging off clotheslines. The Hoist follows the lives of Tim and Max who are hurtling towards the end of school and the challenges of the real world.

At the heart of Tim and Max’s friendship is an elaborate scheme they first dreamt up when they were seven years old, hanging off a clothesline. But as the boys and their friends will learn, sometimes the most unexpected of explosions change the course of the most detailed plans.

The Hoist by Sarah Hope explores what happens after play and before responsibility; the moments that force us to realise that childhood is ending and we have to grow up.

"Exploring friendship, dreams and change, The Hoist deals with the lives of teenagers in Darwin. It’s a coming of age story that avoids sentimentality while celebrating elements of youth culture. The writing is strong, the dialogue fluid and engaging, the characters rounded and the structure engaging—moving between linear storytelling to fast-forwards and flashbacks. It is a great first play."
