Joshua Maxwell’s Very Happy Children With Bright and Wonderful Futures was inspired by the 2018/2019 Climate Strike Movement. Set against the backdrop of Australia’s 2020 Black Summer bushfires, this play is a collaborative theatre project between Jopuka Productions and South Australian Youth Arts that blends art with activism, telling the stories of real youth activists in Australia, and around the world.

On the steps of the Swedish Parliament, a young girl sits and looks at the stars while the world watches. Across the other side of the world, another young girl, Izzy, is caught between a firestorm and a media storm – both of which threaten everything and everyone she knows. Do these girls have bright and wonderful futures or is the world a lost cause?…

Very Happy Children With Bright and Wonderful Futures compassionately examines young people’s hopes and fears for the future.

Very Happy Children With Bright and Wonderful Futures was first produced at the The Launch Pad, Darkinjung Country, Tuggerah, on March 19 2021.
